For the animate persons the gender of French nouns is dependent upon sexual identity.
In general French nouns add "–e" to form the feminine (un étudiant - une étudiante, un ami – une amie, un employé - une employée). However some endings (suffixes) have different form in feminine :

In general French nouns that end in "–e" in masculine do not change their form in feminine:
un élève – une élève (student)
un partenaire - une partenaire (partner)
un stagiaire — une stagiaire (trainee)
un touriste – une touriste (tourist)
Exceptions: un prince (prince) – une princesse (princess), un tigre (tiger) – une tigresse (tigress), un hôte (host) - une hôtesse ( hostess), un poète (poet) – une poétesse (poet)
French animate nouns that are always masculine or feminine.
In French language there are certain nouns which remain masculine even if they refer to women:
un agent (agent, policeman)
un agresseur (attacker)
un amateur (amateur)
un auteur (author)
un commissaire
un détective (detective)
un écrivain (writer)
un ingénieur (engineer)
and others.
